Città Patrimonio UNESCO

Albania proudly hosts two UNESCO World Heritage Cities that showcase centuries of Ottoman architecture and mountain town heritage. Berat, known as the "City of a Thousand Windows," features distinctive white Ottoman houses cascading down hillsides, while Gjirokastër displays remarkable stone architecture and a commanding hilltop castle. Both cities offer authentic glimpses into Albania's layered history, from Illyrian foundations through Ottoman rule to modern independence.

Visa requirements

Standard Albania visa requirements apply. Many nationals including EU, US, UK, and Canadian citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within 180 days.

Sports & nature

Both cities are set against dramatic mountain backdrops perfect for hiking. Berat offers riverside walks along the Osum River and trails up Mount Tomorr, while Gjirokastër provides access to the Drino Valley and nearby Blue Eye spring. The surrounding regions feature hiking routes through traditional villages and pristine mountain landscapes.

Nightlife info

These heritage cities offer intimate evening experiences centered around traditional restaurants and rooftop bars with castle views. Expect relaxed atmospheres with live folk music in historic mangalemi quarter taverns rather than club scenes. Summer evenings bring outdoor dining in cobblestone streets and castle courtyards.

Culture and history info

Berat's history spans 2,400 years with its castle quarter, Mangalem and Gorica neighborhoods, and Onufri Museum showcasing Byzantine iconography. Gjirokastër features the imposing Gjirokastër Castle, the Ethnographic Museum (birthplace of Enver Hoxha), and the distinctive kullas (tower houses) that earned its UNESCO status. Both cities preserve Ottoman-era bazaars and traditional craftsmanship.
