The Forbidden Albania: Behind the Iron Curtain – Dictatorship, Resistance & Freedom is an 8-day communist history tour of Albania designed for culturally curious travellers, history enthusiasts and specialist groups seeking a deeper understanding of the country’s dictatorship, Cold War isolation, political repression, resistance and transition to freedom.
Led by an experienced specialist guide in the group’s required language, the journey connects some of Albania’s most important communist-era, Cold War and remembrance sites. From the House of Leaves and Bunk’Art 2 in Tirana to the Tepelenë Internment Camp Memorial, Gjirokastër Cold War Tunnel, Porto Palermo and Palasë military sites, Sazan Island, Spaç political prison and the Site of Witness and Memory in Shkodër, each stop contributes to a wider historical narrative rather than standing as an isolated attraction.
The programme follows the human story of surveillance, internment, political imprisonment, religious persecution, militarisation and resistance, with particular attention to victims, former political prisoners, persecuted families, religious communities and ordinary Albanians who lived under the regime. Remembrance moments, Rakiya’s Raki & Stories experience and the Voices of Freedom testimony session add personal context, while the final stages deliberately contrast the dictatorship with the creativity, entrepreneurship and freedoms of contemporary Albania. This is not a celebration of the regime or a theatrical dark-tourism experience, but a respectful historical journey centred on human dignity, memory and liberty.
Activities
Day 1. Arrival in Tirana | Albania Today
Arrival at Tirana International Airport and private transfer to the hotel.
The rest of the day is intentionally free. Guests can rest after their journey or discover modern Tirana independently before the historical programme begins the following morning. This first day is an important part of the journey: travellers encounter a lively, open and contemporary capital before discovering how profoundly different life in Albania was only one generation ago.

Day 2. Tirana | The Architecture of Fear
After breakfast, meet the English-speaking specialist guide and begin with the Postbllok Memorial, where elements of Albania’s communist past are brought together in one symbolic site: a bunker, concrete supports from Spaç Prison and a section of the Berlin Wall.
Continue through the former Blloku district, once closed to ordinary Albanians and reserved for the communist political elite.
The central visit of the morning is the House of Leaves, the former surveillance headquarters associated with the Sigurimi secret police. Through original rooms, equipment and documentation, the visit explores how the regime monitored conversations, correspondence, personal relationships and private thought.
After the visit to the House of Leaves, continue to Kazerma e Cerenit for lunch.After lunch, visit Bunk’Art 2, beneath central Tirana, to explore the machinery of political repression: the Ministry of Interior, the Sigurimi secret police, surveillance, interrogation and the persecution of those considered enemies of the state.
In the early evening, join Rakiya’s signature Raki & Stories experience at Komiteti. Over one traditional raki and small local accompaniments, the guide brings everyday life under the dictatorship into focus: rationing, queues, banned religion, foreign television, Western music, informants, escape attempts and the difference between what Albanians could say publicly and privately.

Day 3. Tirana to Tepelenë and Gjirokastër | When a Family Became the Enemy
Depart Tirana after breakfast and travel south to the Tepelenë Internment Camp Memorial.
Here the story moves from the institutions of repression to the people who suffered under them. Entire families labelled as 'class enemies' were forcibly interned; women, children and elderly people were punished for their family background, political associations or perceived disloyalty.
The visit is conducted as a place of remembrance. The guide explains collective punishment, forced displacement, deprivation and the destruction of family lives. Rakiya includes a small floral tribute and a moment of silence in memory of the victims.
After lunch, continue to Gjirokastër and visit the Cold War Tunnel, an underground complex built to protect the local political leadership in the event of attack. The contrast is deliberate: while families were interned in harsh conditions, the regime invested heavily in underground shelters and preparation for a war that never came.
The remainder of the evening is free in Gjirokastër.

Day 4. Gjirokastër to Porto Palermo, Palasë and Vlorë | The Fortress State
After breakfast, travel through southern Albania towards the Riviera and Porto Palermo.
At Porto Palermo, board a private local motorboat for a focused Cold War coastal experience. From the water, approach the entrance of the former submarine tunnel and view the military coastline while the guide explains Albania’s changing alliances with Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union and China, followed by the country’s near-total political isolation.
After returning to the small Porto Palermo wharf, continue north along the coast and stop for a seafood lunch.
Later in the day, stop above Palasë for a short guided exploration of the remarkable Big Bunker military complex. From the abandoned command structure overlooking the Adriatic, a short uneven trail descends towards a large concrete tunnel built into the mountainside. The site provides one of the most visual examples of how the regime transformed Albania’s coastline into a defensive frontier against an invasion that never came.
The Palasë exploration lasts approximately 75–90 minutes and involves uneven terrain. Closed walking shoes are required.
Continue to Vlorë and check in. The evening is free.

Day 5. Sazan Island | Albania’s Secret Military Island
After breakfast, transfer to Vlorë Marina and board a private boat for Sazan Island.
For decades, Sazan was one of Albania’s most restricted military zones. The island preserves an extraordinary landscape of abandoned barracks, officers’ housing, administrative buildings, bunkers, gun positions, defensive fortifications and the remains of a community built around permanent military readiness.
The guided exploration focuses on Albania’s Cold War isolation, Soviet and Chinese influence, coastal defence and the daily reality of living inside a military settlement closed to ordinary citizens.
A picnic lunch is included on the island.
The historical programme is designed as a focused half-day experience, with approximately 2–2.5 hours of exploration on Sazan and around 4–4.5 hours total including boat transfers. Return to Vlorë in the early afternoon, followed by free time.

Day 6. Vlorë to Spaç and Shkodër | The Prison That Rebelled
Depart early from Vlorë for the journey north to Spaç, one of the most notorious political prisons and forced-labour camps of communist Albania.
Set in an isolated mountain valley, Spaç imprisoned political opponents and forced many prisoners to work in the nearby mines under harsh conditions. The guide explains prison life, forced labour, isolation, punishment and the difficulty of escape.
The visit culminates with the story of the Spaç Revolt of 21–23 May 1973. Political prisoners rose against the authorities, raised an Albanian flag without the communist star and openly demanded freedom. The uprising was violently suppressed and several prisoners were later sentenced to death.
At Spaç, the group takes part in a simple Rakiya Moment of Remembrance: the guide shares the stories of prisoners who resisted the dictatorship, followed by a minute of silence and a small floral tribute.
After the visit, continue to Shkodër. The evening is free for reflection and independent exploration.

Day 7. Shkodër to Tirana | Faith, Resistance and Voices of Freedom
After breakfast, visit the Site of Witness and Memory in Shkodër, one of Albania’s most important places for understanding political and religious persecution.
The programme then follows the story of religious resistance in northern Albania. Under the dictatorship, organised religion was systematically attacked and Albania was declared the world’s first officially atheist state. The guide introduces the experiences of clergy, believers and laypeople who were imprisoned, tortured or killed for refusing to surrender their faith and conscience.
Continue to Mrizi i Zanave for a farm-to-table lunch. After days exploring collectivisation, isolation and the destruction of private initiative, this modern Albanian agritourism experience also provides a subtle contrast: local entrepreneurship, creativity and rural revival in a free society.
Return to Tirana.
In the late afternoon, join Voices of Freedom, a carefully arranged testimony and remembrance session with a former political prisoner, survivor, family member or representative of an organisation preserving the memory of communist persecution, subject to availability.
After time to rest, gather for a farewell dinner at Blloku in Tirana, celebrating contemporary Albania and the freedoms that define the country today.

Day 8. Tirana | Freedom and Departure
Breakfast at the hotel.
The final day is free to enjoy Tirana independently, according to the flight schedule.
A private Rakiya transfer from the hotel to Tirana International Airport is included.
There is intentionally no historical programme today. After a week focused on dictatorship, persecution and resistance, the final image of the journey is Albania as it is today: open, dynamic and free.
