Albania in 8 Days: Slow Travel Through Culture & Heritage

This Albania slow travel tour is designed for seniors and curious travelers who prefer depth over distance. The itinerary moves at an unhurried pace through some of the country's most remarkable places: the vibrant capital Tirana, the medieval hilltop fortress of Kruja, the UNESCO heritage city of Berat, and the dramatic stone architecture of Gjirokastra. Along the way, you cruise the pelican-filled waters of Karavasta Lagoon, walk among ancient Greek ruins at Apollonia and Butrint, and visit the legendary Blue Eye spring on the Ionian coast. Three comfortable hotel bases mean you unpack just three times in eight days. A private English-speaking guide accompanies the group throughout. This small-group Albania tour for seniors is ideal for travelers over 60 seeking authentic history, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the warm hospitality of one of Europe's most rewarding destinations.

Activities

Day 1 — Arrival in Tirana

Upon arrival, you are met by your guide and driver in the arrivals hall at Tirana International Airport and transferred to your hotel in the city centre [20 km / approx. 20 min]. The rest of the day is entirely at leisure to settle in, freshen up, and relax after your journey. In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner at a restaurant in the heart of Tirana. Overnight in Tirana at a highly rated (8.5+) 4-star hotel, well positioned in the heart of the city.

Day 2 — Tirana City Tour & the Roman Amphitheatre of Durrës

After breakfast, your guide meets you at reception and we begin with a walking tour of Tirana [2 hrs / entirely flat], strolling through Blloku, visiting the Et'hem Bey Mosque, passing by the iconic Tirana Pyramid, and browsing the old bazaar. Mid-morning, we drive to Durrës [38 km / approx. 35 min], home to one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the Balkans. Dating to the 2nd century and fully accessible with flat walkways throughout, it is one of the most impressive ancient sites in the region [guided visit: 1 hr]. Lunch follows at a seafront restaurant overlooking the Adriatic, after which a short stroll [30 min] takes us through the Venetian Tower and old town quarter, before the return drive to Tirana [38 km / approx. 35 min]. The evening is free to explore the city at your own pace. Overnight in Tirana.

Day 3 — Kruja Castle & Transfer to the UNESCO City of Berat

After breakfast, we check out and drive north to Kruja [35 km / approx. 45 min], where Kruja Castle sits perched on a dramatic ridge above the valley. This was the stronghold of Albania's national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, and the castle and Skanderbeg Museum tell that story with remarkable depth [guided visit: 1.5 hrs]. Below the fortress, we pause in the covered Ottoman bazaar, where handmade crafts and local textiles fill every stall [45 min], before continuing our drive south to Berat [155 km / approx. 2 hrs 15 min], a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the City of a Thousand Windows. We arrive by early afternoon, check in, and in the evening take a gentle walk through the cobblestone lanes of the old town and along the Osum River [1 hr]. Overnight in Berat at a highly rated (8.5+) 4-star hotel in a good area of the city.

Day 4 — Karavasta Lagoon & Ancient Apollonia Ruins

After breakfast, we drive to Divjaka-Karavasta National Park [60 km / approx. 50 min], a UNESCO-listed wetland and one of the most ecologically significant habitats on the Mediterranean coast. An optional fully seated boat cruise can take us among Dalmatian pelicans and flamingos across the calm lagoon waters [45 to 60 min]. Those who wish can walk a flat, shaded pine forest path beside the lagoon [20 min]. We then continue to Apollonia Archaeological Park [45 km / approx. 40 min], where the ruins of one of Albania's finest ancient Greek cities unfold across a gentle hill above the Adriatic plain. We explore the colonnaded stoa, the odeon theatre, and the Byzantine monastery museum at an unhurried pace [1.5 hrs], with lunch served at the hilltop restaurant on-site. We return to Berat [55 km / approx. 45 min] in the mid-afternoon, leaving the evening free to rest or stroll along the riverside. Overnight in Berat.

Day 5 — Scenic Transfer South to Gjirokastra, the UNESCO Stone City

After breakfast, we check out and drive south through the Drino Valley to Gjirokastra [120 km / approx. 1 hr 40 min], with a rest stop along the way [15 min]. Arriving before noon, we take a slow orientation drive through this UNESCO World Heritage city [20 min], where the hilltop castle, stone-roofed Ottoman houses, and medieval bazaar reveal a city unlike anywhere else. After checking in, lunch is served in the old town, followed by a gentle stroll through the Qafa e Pazarit bazaar quarter [45 min]. The afternoon is free for rest before dinner at the hotel restaurant, with panoramic views over the Stone City's rooftops. Overnight in Gjirokastra at a highly rated (8.5+) 4-star hotel, set in a good area of the city.

Day 6 — Full Day in Gjirokastra: Castle, Zekate House & the Ottoman Bazaar

After breakfast, a short van transfer brings us to Gjirokastra Castle [approx. 5 min], a UNESCO site and one of the largest fortresses in the Balkans, where the National Museum houses Cold War exhibitions including a captured US Air Force aircraft in the courtyard. We explore the fortress at a relaxed pace, with a coffee break on the castle terrace and sweeping views across the Drino Valley [1.5 hrs total]. On foot from the castle, we visit Zekate House [45 min], a beautifully preserved 18th-century double-tower Ottoman mansion considered the finest of its kind in Albania. A long, relaxed lunch follows in the shaded old town, after which we spend time at leisure in the Ottoman bazaar, discovering handmade crafts, antiques, and local coffee shops [1 hr]. The afternoon is entirely free. Overnight in Gjirokastra.

Day 7 — Blue Eye Spring, Butrint UNESCO Ruins & Lunch on the Ionian Coast

After breakfast, we drive south to Syri i Kaltër [55 km / approx. 50 min], where water of an extraordinary electric blue wells up from a deep karst spring in the beech forest, making it one of the most visually striking natural sights in Albania [1 hr at site / electric cart available at €5 per person]. We then continue our drive to Butrint National Archaeological Park [35 km / approx. 35 min], a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian history are layered across shaded, flat trails beside the water. We walk a guided circuit through the ancient theatre, baptistery mosaics, and Venetian tower [1 hr], before we drive to Sarandë [20 km / approx. 20 min] for a seafront lunch with views across to the Greek island of Corfu. An optional stroll along the flat waterfront promenade is available after lunch [20 min]. We then make the return drive to Gjirokastra [65 km / approx. 1 hr], where the evening closes with a farewell dinner on the hotel's panoramic terrace. Overnight in Gjirokastra.

Day 8 — Departure from Gjirokastra to Tirana International Airport

After a leisurely breakfast, we check out and begin the drive north to Tirana [230 km / approx. 2 hrs 30 min], with a rest stop above the Vjosa River valley near Tepelena [15 min]. We stop for a farewell lunch in the Fier or Lushnjë area before the final stretch to Tirana International Airport. Your guide assists with luggage and sees you through to departures.
