GONXHE: The Untold Story of Mother Teresa
Before the world knew Mother Teresa, there was Gonxhe Bojaxhiu.
Born in Skopje into an Albanian Catholic family, Gonxhe would eventually become one of the world's most recognised symbols of compassion, faith and service. Yet the story of her origins extends beyond a single city, connecting Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia through centuries of shared history, religious tradition and cultural identity.
GONXHE: From Albania to the World is a seven-day RakiYa Signature Journey following that remarkable story across three countries.
Beginning in Tirana, the journey explores the historical foundations of Albanian identity through the legacy of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg in Krujë and the Catholic traditions of Shkodër. At the Site of Witness and Memory, travellers encounter the deeply human story of religious persecution under Albania's communist dictatorship.
Crossing into Kosovo, the itinerary continues through the historic streets of Prizren, the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa in Pristina and the Marian sanctuary of Letnica, traditionally associated with Gonxhe's decision to dedicate her life to religious service.
The journey then reaches Skopje, her birthplace, where the Mother Teresa Memorial House and the city's historic quarters illuminate the environment in which she grew up. A final excursion to Ohrid introduces the ancient Christian heritage of the Balkans, before a RakiYa Signature farewell dinner brings the experience to a close.
More than a pilgrimage, GONXHE connects religious heritage with the history of the Balkans, cultural discovery and the universal values of humanity and compassion.
Designed for cultural tour operators, specialist religious travel organisers, private groups and the Albanian diaspora, the programme can also be adapted for Catholic departures with opportunities for Mass, prayer and reflection, subject to local arrangements.
Three countries. One remarkable region. One Albanian girl whose story reached the world.

At Krujë Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum, discover the story of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, whose resistance to Ottoman expansion became an important chapter in the history of medieval Albania and Christian Europe.
Continue through the historic Old Bazaar, where traditional craftsmanship and local architecture preserve the character of the town, followed by a traditional Albanian lunch.
In the afternoon, travel to Shkodër, long recognised as one of the most significant centres of Albanian Catholic heritage.

The morning begins at the Site of Witness and Memory in Shkodër, a former communist-era prison and interrogation centre.
This deeply moving visit explores one of the most difficult periods of Albania's modern history, when religious institutions were suppressed and priests, religious leaders and ordinary believers faced imprisonment and persecution.
Through historical interpretation and personal stories, travellers discover how communities preserved their beliefs and identity despite systematic repression.
Leaving Albania, cross into Kosovo and continue to Prizren, one of the most atmospheric historic towns in the Balkans.
After lunch, enjoy a guided exploration of its compact Old Town, where Ottoman-era architecture, traditional streets and Catholic heritage reflect the region's complex cultural history.

Day 4. The Decision That Changed a Life | Pristina – Letnica – Skopje
Begin the morning at the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa in Pristina, an important contemporary landmark honouring her life and Albanian heritage.
Continue through the countryside of Kosovo to Letnica, one of the most meaningful stops on the journey.
The Marian sanctuary at Letnica holds a special place in the story of Gonxhe Bojaxhiu. As a young woman, she visited this pilgrimage destination, traditionally associated with her developing religious vocation and the decision that would eventually lead her towards a life of service beyond the Balkans.
The visit combines guided storytelling with time for personal reflection in the peaceful surroundings of the sanctuary.
For Catholic pilgrimage groups, arrangements for Mass or additional prayer may be incorporated, subject to confirmation with the local religious authorities.
After lunch, cross into North Macedonia and continue to Skopje.
An evening orientation walk introduces the city where Gonxhe was born and spent her early years.

Beyond the story of Mother Teresa, discover the wider history of Skopje through its historic quarters and atmospheric Old Bazaar.
The afternoon is deliberately unhurried, with time to explore independently, enjoy local cafés or reflect on the experiences of the preceding days.
